Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Agriculture plays a significant role in the economic and social development of rural communities in Nigeria, with a large portion of the population engaged in farming activities. In regions such as Kebbi State, agriculture is not only a livelihood but also a key driver of local economies and food security (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). However, despite its importance, there are numerous challenges that farmers face, including limited access to modern farming techniques, poor knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices, and inadequate dissemination of information. The media, particularly films, have increasingly been recognized as an effective tool for educating and raising awareness among rural populations (Sani, 2024). Films, with their widespread appeal and accessibility, can reach farmers in remote areas, providing vital information on improved farming practices, new technologies, government policies, and environmental sustainability. In Jega Local Government Area, Kebbi State, where agriculture is the primary economic activity, this study explores the effectiveness of films as tools for agricultural awareness. By examining how films influence the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of farmers, the study aims to assess whether they are a viable means of promoting agricultural development in this region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Farmers in Jega Local Government Area face significant challenges related to access to information on modern agricultural practices and government agricultural policies. Despite various efforts by governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve agricultural knowledge among farmers, many still rely on traditional farming methods that limit productivity. While films have proven to be an effective medium for reaching rural populations, there is limited research on how films specifically address agricultural awareness and the extent to which they influence the practices of farmers in Kebbi State. This study seeks to investigate how films can be used as tools for agricultural awareness in Jega, evaluating their effectiveness in communicating key agricultural messages and encouraging the adoption of new farming techniques. The findings will contribute to understanding the potential of media in rural agricultural development and help inform strategies for better reaching and educating farmers in Kebbi State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the effectiveness of films in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in Jega Local Government Area.

To evaluate how films influence the knowledge and practices of farmers in relation to modern agricultural techniques and sustainability.

To explore the potential of films in promoting government agricultural policies and programs among farmers in Jega.

1.4 Research Questions

How effective are films in conveying agricultural information to farmers in Jega Local Government Area?

In what ways do films influence the agricultural knowledge and practices of farmers in Jega?

To what extent can films contribute to the promotion of government agricultural policies among farmers in Jega?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Films are an effective tool for disseminating agricultural information to farmers in Jega Local Government Area.

Films significantly influence the agricultural knowledge and practices of farmers in Jega.

Films play a significant role in promoting government agricultural policies among farmers in Jega.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in exploring the potential of films as an educational tool in rural areas, particularly in promoting agricultural awareness and sustainable farming practices. It will provide insights into how films can be effectively used in rural development programs, offering a culturally relevant and accessible medium for reaching farmers. The findings could help policymakers, agricultural extension services, and filmmakers develop more targeted media interventions aimed at improving agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable practices in rural areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the use of films to promote agricultural awareness in Jega Local Government Area, Kebbi State, and limits its scope to the influence of films on farming practices and policies. The study does not explore other media forms or address the broader agricultural challenges faced by farmers. One limitation of the study could be the self-reporting bias in the data collected from farmers, as they may overstate the influence of films due to social desirability.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Films: Motion pictures used as a medium for conveying educational content, particularly in rural areas, to raise awareness about issues such as agriculture.

Agricultural Awareness: Knowledge and understanding of modern agricultural practices, technologies, and policies that improve farming efficiency and sustainability.

Farmers: Individuals involved in the cultivation of crops and the raising of livestock, primarily in rural settings, whose livelihood depends on agriculture.
